Fresh Food Basket from locally grown farmers from Dawson's Market!

Our Story
We've been in business since the 1980's as Ellwood Thompson's Local Market in Richmond, Virginia. Rick Hood and Eric Walters opened City Market in 1989. It was a small, 3,000 square foot community market located near the intersection of Patterson and Libbie Avenues. Complete with a small takeout deli, the market provided hungry Richmonders with convenient access to organic produce and natural products.

Four years later, City Market made the move to Carytown in search of a larger space. Anica, the 12-year-old daughter of a market employee, is actually responsible for giving the grocery store its name. While many may think that the store is named after a "Mr. Ellwood Thompson," it's actually named after the intersection where the store is located. In 1993, the store opened on the corner of Ellwood Ave and Thompson St., and this is how Ellwood Thompson's was born.

After some time, Eric Walters decided to move on to new interests, making Rick Hood the sole owner of Ellwood Thompson's.

The market continued to grow and, in 2007, Rick decided to expand the market to Rockville, Maryland. He fell in love with the history, geography, sense of community and felt that Rockville Town Square would be the perfect place to set up shop. In 2010, Rick gained support from the city of Rockville and its community to begin business and by 2012 the new market was settled and running.

Our commitment to you is as strong as the journey we've taken to get here. Our history is the grounds for what we aim to bring to Rockville and it's wonderful community. We are proud to be welcome and welcome you to come in and join us in our mission.

Who We Are
Dawson?s Market is a local natural foods grocery store run by a closely-knit community of food lovers, localists, and environmentalists.  Our market is located in the heart of Rockville, Maryland - Rockville Town Square.

Working as a community, we all stand behind the same mission: To be the heart and soul of our community through a strong commitment to local and organic foods.

Our market is an extension of who we are and the lifestyles we promote.  Our employees have a passion for food and are deeply involved in finding fresh, local products to put on our shelves.  They reflect our spirit in their daily lives through gardening, recycling, composting, volunteering, loving nature and being environmentally conscious.

We find that our community, our customers and the people we serve, maintain the same lifestyle and we aim to bring them the best that Maryland has to offer.  We value the connection we have with customers, local artisans, farmers and businesses alike.

The name "Dawson's Market" was born from one of the most influential farming families in what is now Montgomery County. The Dawsons paved the way for local agriculture and natural living in the Rockville community.
