He first made a splash on Broadway as the title role in the Tony Award-winning The Wiz. De Shields went on to win an Emmy Award for the NBC adaptation of Ain?t Misbehavin?. He also was nominated for Tony Awards for his performances in Play On! and The Full Monty.
