Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1939. Began painting career in Cleveland in 1974; was Assistant Curator at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Moved to New York City in 1985.

 Solo exhibitions include the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Ohio; the Alternative Museum, New York; Jamaica Center for the Arts, Queens NY, New England School of Art & Design, Boston , MA, Howard Scott Gallery, NY; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA,1990: M-13 Gallery, NY: Tomoko Liguori Gallery, NY; Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, AL: Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, Cleveland, OH; the Indianapolis Center for Contemporary Art; and the Miami University Art Museum, Ohio among others.

Awards include the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council, the Robert Blackburn Print Workshop; Tesque Foundation Individual Artist Award, Joan Mitchell Fellowship for Painting; the Cleveland Art Prize and a commission-ceiling mural for the Cleveland Public Library, 1996. 

Works in are in the collections of twenty Museums, including the High Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Columbus Museum of Art, M.I.T List Center for Visual Arts, New York Public Library, New Jersey State Museum, Studio Museum in Harlem; the Bronx Museum and the Birmingham Museum. His works have been exhibited internationally in Dream Singers, Story Tellers: An African American Presence,  Tokushima Modern Art  Museum and the Otani Art Museum in Japan;  Across the Pacific, Seoul Art Center, Seoul, S. Korea , Post 90?s American Art, Gyeongnam Art Museum and in other exhibitions in Canada, Belgium, France, Germany and Turkey.
