Description
Wood, alabaster stone, and gold leaf sculpture
Artist: Kathryn Vinson CO
I created this piece with the idea that fire is an odd, almost animal-like, creature that consumes as it burns. I added to the beautiful form of the charred wood (left almost as it was given to me) by making an alabaster "spirit" and enhancing the lines of the wood, where the spirit has been with metal leaf embers. I realized, while making it, that it took on an altar-like aspect, with fire as an anthropomorphized version of itself.
The stone used was Utah Alabaster and there is a composite leaf gliding on the wood. It has an oil-based finish and a granite base that can be separated for transportation. I pinned the stone so it can be moved easily and to allow the patron to change the position to their taste.
It's meant for indoor display only.
