Description

Ocean Wise is a comprehensive open water skills program led by Herbert and Oceanna, certified water safety instructors and life guards.  Ocean wise is 10 classes long and each week the you will learn about how weather patters in constant flux like the winds, swell, current, rip-currents and tides interact with local unique coastal landscapes including Garza, Guiones, Pelada and La Boca.  Upon completeion of this program you will have a greater understanding of the motions involved in the natural environment of the sea specifically in our area and therefore capable to read the water and make intuittive decisions on how to enjoy the amazing power of the ocean safely.

Ocean Wise instructors Herbert Miron and Oceanna Macmillan-Ord.

Herbert grew up swimming. He was taught how to surf by lifeguards in Sipacate, Guatemala in 1994 at the age of 15. At that time and among this ocean crew, surfing couldn?t be separated from becoming a waterman. Open water ocean competitive trainings and joining a water polo team were a part of the lifestyle - it was all tight together. Skateboarding was already a part of his life since he was 10 years old. The combination of swimming, ocean skills and skateboarding made learning how to surf a lot easier than normal. Herbert became a lifeguard in Denmark in 2005 and worked there for a number of years. He founded Ocean Wise in 2016 which became a combination of his background and how that makes sense teaching not only ocean skills and skateboarding individually but also how the combination of them results in a very fast accelerated learning curve for surfing. His Ocean Skills Program was born in 2018 as a result of living in Nosara, Costa Rica and spotting the need of learning to read the water when one is always surrounded by the ocean in order to enjoy its amazing power safely.

Oceanna grew up in Nosara with a love for all things water. After graduating from Del Mar Academy in 2018 she left for Canada and completed all her courses for the National lifesaving program and Water Safety Instructor. She started college and then due to covid, was able to continue studies online. She moved back home to Nosara and started working with Herbert in the Ocean Wise program. She teaches swimming lessons to children and adults as well as Aerial yoga in between her daily studies.
