Ann Rosen graduated from SUNY at Buffalo with a BFA and the Visual Studies Workshop with a MFA, studying with Nathan Lyons, Joan Lyons and John Wood. She studied printmaking, photography and alternative photographic processes. Her influences include the emotional portraits of Diane Arbus, the stark B&W portraits of Irving Penn and Helen Levittā??s street shots portraying human pathos and joy.
Major projects include:
In the Presence of Family: Brooklyn Portraits, 2002-2010, portray how families are transformed through biracial adoption, LGBTQ parenting and intermarriage.
Being Seen: Women who live in shelter, 2012- present, portray women living in homeless shelters. These black and white photographs highlight their resilience.
Carry On: A Pandemic Diary, 2020-present, a collection of black and white close-up medium format film portraits of friends and family and their experiences during the Covid19 pandemic.
Rosen received residencies at Artpark, NY, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Henry Street Settlement, NYC, Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, NY and Mauser Foundation, Costa Rica.
She has received several grants from the Brooklyn Arts Council to develop her project, In the Presence of Family: Brooklyn Portraits, documenting Brooklyn families at street fairs and in my studio. In 2016 and 2021, she received grants from the Puffin Foundation to teach digital photography to women living in shelter and women and their families who have been formerly homeless and are now living in permanent housing.

The entire project, In the Presence of Family: Brooklyn Portraits and Revisiting In the Presence of Family: Brooklyn Portraits, including her published books, is permanently a part of the Center for Brooklyn History/ Brooklyn Public Library.
Rosen's work has been reviewed in the Village Voice; NY Times; Newark Sunday Star Ledger; Brooklyn Courier; Brooklyn Eagle; Pfizer Journal and 11th Annual Brooklyn Pride Magazine.
Her photographs and books are represented in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art Library, NYC; Albright-Knox Gallery and Library, Buffalo, NY; and Burchfield-Penney Art Center, Buffalo, NY.
