Description

"Bubbles Below" by Ellen Garvey

Medium: Blown and fused glass

Size: 19" x 8"

Artist Statement:

I work with both blown and fused glass so this year I am combining those in a unique way. I blew about 50 glass balls (think small blown glass ornaments). After annealing, I arranged them into the shape of the cod and "slumped" them in a kiln for glass fusing. The balls deflated a bit and fused together to make this unique artful cod. The shades of blue and resulting texture evoke the movement and colors of the sea and her inhabitants.

Artist Biography:

Ellen has been a glass blower for several years. She started by taking a glassblowing class as a way to escape from her demanding career in high tech. It wasn't long before she was hooked. It's hot, dirty, expensive, and demanding: perfect. When the pandemic hit, glassblowing ground to a halt. So glass fusing - which she had previously just dabbled in - moved to the front burner. So now blowing and fusing alternate for her attention. She is an instructor of blown and fused glass at Diablo Glass School in Boston, a juried Artist Member of both the Marblehead Arts Association and Gallery 53 (of the Rocky Neck Art Colony) in Gloucester, MA, a member of the executive team at Gallery 53, an active volunteer and three-term board member of the Marblehead Festival of Arts and artist member, finance committee member, and past board member of the Salem Arts Association.
