"World Heritage cities have all made notable impacts on the world and are home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. Independence Hall became a UNESCO heritage site in 1979, significant because both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution - documents that have had a profound impact on lawmakers around the world - were signed there.
"The announcement comes after a two-year campaign for the distinction, which places Philadelphia in the esteemed company of 266 World Heritage Cities, including Paris, Cairo, Jerusalem, Rome, Berlin, and Kyoto. The status, likened by officials to an amped up Sister Cities program, is expected to enhance Philadelphia's international stature and serve as a growth engine for tourism"
Alan Greenberger, the city's deputy mayor for economic development, said the goal is to build bonds with selected World Heritage cities similar to those that exist with Philadelphia's sister cities. That could result in university exchanges, shared research, or business-to-business partnerships, he said.
Denis Ricard, secretary-general of the Organization of World Heritage Cities, added that Philadelphia will gain access to programs that help cities maintain and promote their heritage."It opens up a full network of cities around the world," said Ricard, who toured Philadelphia in 2014 after the city petitioned for full membership."

"After reading this book, not only do I have a greater respect for our Founding Fathers, but I also understand why Ms. Bowen used the word "Miracle" in her title. It's remarkable to think that our Constitution, which has proven durable over the past two centuries in spite of its flaws, arose out of those intense debates in Philadelphia's sweltering summer.
This book is particularly valuable for its perspective. Learning about the delegates' personalities and backgrounds was fascinating, and seeing the Convention in the context of the social and political conditions of early America was especially insightful. I also enjoyed seeing the early colonies through the eyes of foreign visitors.
If you're interested in the history of the U.S. Constitution, this book is a must"
