Item Special Note

Artist's Statement:

"In Alaska after a fire there often appears both horsetail and fireweed. Fireweed holds the exposed ground as it grows upward sometimes to near human height. The new bright yellow-green shoots are edible...my daughter and grandchildren pickled some this year. As summer progresses the vivid lavender flowers appear, reminding us that winter will be upon us in a not too distant future. The bees hustle in the long northern daylight hours to make honey. Fireweed honey, a light and sweet nectar. Then, after the first heavy frost, the leaves of fireweed turn brilliant red and orange contrasting with deep green spruce and the yellows of birch leaves and puski leaves as fall approaches. Fireweed departs and renews with a final flourish of snow-like seedlings filling the air and our noses with fuzzy wonder and reminding us--winter is near.

Fireweed, holding together the fragile exposed soil, bringing us hope, nourishment and great beauty--Ashes to Art in nature."
