Item Description
Successful completion of a telegraph cable between Ireland and Newfoundland on August 5, 1858 was a triumph of the age. In American cities parades, fireworks and sermons celebrated the event. Whereas it would normally take at least ten days to deliver a message by ship, because of the cable it would now became a matter of minutes. A New York jeweler, Tiffany, bought up the excess cable from one of the two laying ships and cut it into souvenir samples, one of which is displayed on this plaque. Unfortunately, there were electrical problems with the cable from the beginning. After a month no coherent message could be understood, and after two months complete silence. Permanent connection between the old and the new worlds was established later with the laying of two transatlantic cables in 1866. This plaque is from the National Museum of History and Technology Smithsonian Institution. The plaque measures 9" x 7" and the cable attached measures 4" long. This is missing the center brass band that identifies it as Tiffany, so we are selling this at a significant discount; a prize for either the antique telegraph or Tiffany collector starting at $9.99.
