Item Description

"Christmas in Mexico" presents a vibrant portrait of the nine-day festival of Las Posadas held each year between December 16 and Christmas Day. The festival climaxes in a procession in which a boy and a girl play Mary and Joseph looking for an inn. Following them are the people of the village, who carry candles as they march throughout the town. The village here is Taxco -- a silver mining town also known for its profusion of beautiful flowers. Although an American, artist Chavela Castrejon is a long-time student of Mexican customs and a resident of Taxco. She has used the golden church of Santa Prisca and the Loma Larga Mountain in the background for the procession. The Mexicans are dressed in bright costumes of red, green, blue, yellow and white. They walk through the ancient cobblestone street for which Taxco, a national monument, is famous. Royal Doulton hand-casted and hand painted this plate. The deep sculpture emphasizes the rich texture of the cobblestone street and the red tile roofs, 8" sq. A lovely piece to display on wall, or in china cabinet. Mint condition.
