My father owned a printing business, so with all the scrap paper and a pencil, I started drawing early. My parents enrolled me in classes with the Wichita Art Association, the Wichita School of Fine Arts, and privately with a prominent local artist for eight years. I also studied at Southwestern College and Wichita State University. As an adult, I worked in the printing and graphic design industry, eventually owning my own business. I was also a firefighter with the Wichita Fire Dept in 1960s and 1970s and later as a volunteer fire fighter for several years. Much of what I paint is from my life and work experiences. I especially love painting fire scenes in an impressionist style. I want you to “feel the heat” and “smell the smoke” when you view my paintings!

Item Special Note

Artist's Statement:

"'Cleansing' portrays three wildland firefighters at work. The inferno behind them glows an eerie combination of reds, oranges, and yellows. All of these warm colors contrast against the blackened trees as the tongues of the fire consumes its prey. Eventually, the fire will be out. The earth will be cleansed of overgrowth and dead limbs, and then it will be ready to start over."

"New Growth: The fire is now out. The whisps of smoke still hangs in the distance. The black charcoal of ash blankets the earth and covers the trees. The land has taken a breather, a short rest. Now the time has come to cover itself with new growth. A new dawn brings new opportunities both for man and the land."
