Item Description

Akio Takamori is a visual artist who primarily works with figurative clay sculptures. His work concerns itself with the human experience. The passage of time, locations, memories and history are important themes in Takamori’s work.

To create comfort zones, human beings have a tendency to either homogenize or reject heterogeneities. This psychological phenomenon can literally blind people and we can see black in white and white in black to comfort us.

“It is fascinating for me to realize how people appear so very differently when viewed individually, and then collectively. It is amazing to me that I do not notice this shift in perspective, most of the time, while living among the great mix of all kinds of people in our contemporary society…I want to create a situation in which this social awkwardness can stimulate people’s curiosity and interest in others. In some ways, this can be a beautiful awkwardness that is uncomfortable, but non-threatening. At this particular “crossroad” there is no danger, but people’s senses are heightened and alert. This is where a sense of humor, generosity and humility are close at hand.”
