About the Artist
Jim DeWitt was born in Oakland, California, in 1930. As a five-year-old, he drew pictures of a sailboat built by his father in their backyard. Later he studied art at Oakland’s California College of Arts and at Los Angeles Art Center College of Design – learning sailmaking and racing sailboats in his spare time.
Jim gained international renown as a winning yachtsman. His passion for painting kept pace with his love of sailing, and his impressive racing career is reflected in the authority and honesty of his nautical paintings.
Jim has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide. Well known collectors include Dennis Conner, Buddy Melges, Bill Koch, and Roy Disney. Jim’s racing paintings are valued assets in private and corporate collections, and are on permanent display in many prestigious yacht clubs around the world.
In 2012, Jim DeWitt was named the Artist in Residence by the Golden Gate Yacht Club, host of the 34th America’s Cup on San Francisco Bay.
