Item Description

This three-dimensional piece by artist Jeff Richards is especially electric. Jeff created it as part of a series on what he calls "21st century Western art mandalas."  He is "keenly interested in geometry" and says "the calm, still square in the center is a nod to the higher self as a kind of sacred geometry suspended within a vortex of golden energy." That "golden energy" is represented by embroidery thread wound tightly over painted fibreboard.

Jeff says of his education in fine art that he spent seven years completing a BA and MFA in Studio Art and Sculpture respectively and the next seven years "unlearning" all he'd been taught, finally beginning on what he regarded as his "real work."

On the topic of "meaningful creativity" he says it was an artist friend "thrusting" a box of spools of industrial sewing thread into his hands that planted the seed for the mandala series. After putting it on a shelf and forgetting about it he finally returned to it and began idly playing. Within two years it had become his primary medium.

Dimensions: 30" high by 30" wide by 1.5
deep
