Item Description
A fascinating portrayal of a handsome, timeless house in Chowan County near Edenton and of the people associated with it. Designed by British architect William Nichols and built for prominent planter James Cathcart Johnston, the home and its collections have remained intact for almost 200 years. Many lavish color photographs by John O. Peters depict both the interior and exterior of the house. A large number of original documents are reproduced that chronicle Johnston's management of the plantation during the antebellum period. This new book will appeal to local and state historians, architectural historians, genealogists, and anyone interested in the Albemarle region of NC during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
