Item Description
The "Saipan Beacon" announces Japan's surrender and the end of the war. The "Saipan Beacon" was an American Marine Corps newspaper in Saipan during WWII. This newspaper article was published on Wednesday, August 15, 1945. After four days of tense waiting, news came over the radio that President Truman had announced that the Japanese government was willing to accept the Allied Potsdam ultimatum; this meant an unconditional surrender. The surrender of Japan came four days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, three days after Russia declared war on Japan, and two days after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Japan offered to surrender on the tenth and the four Allies accepted this surrender on the eleventh. This newsprint includes the headlines: "Japs Quit", "War Ends!", "World War II Over Today", "Saipan Celebrates Victory". It is framed and measures 11.5" x 14.5" 4 pages.
