NU Head Coach Neil McPhee
The 2010 season marks Husky skipper Neil McPhee’s 25th as head coach at Northeastern, the second longest tenure as coach, behind only McPhee’s own coach John “Tinker” Connelly. McPhee has guided the Huskies to an amazing 18 winning seasons and postseason appearances in 15 of the last 17 years. Last season, he steered the Huskies to a 28-25 record (13-11 CAA). McPhee will look to lead the Huskies to their second straight CAA Tournament appearance.
McPhee has an excellent history of developing top prospects, including Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena. Pena had a career year in 2007, in which he was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year and received the American League Silver Slugger Award at first base. He was critical during the Rays’ 2008 World Series run and won the 2008 Gold Glove Award for his play at first base. Pena was a two-year letterman under McPhee from 1997-98 and was selected by the Texas Rangers with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 1998 MLB Draft. He is the highest drafted player in any sport at Northeastern.
About Mason and Glavine
Both Mason and Glavine were superb players at Northeastern in the 1990s and played on championship teams during that time. Mason was the catcher and captain of the 1996 and 1997 teams and played in the NCAA Tournament in 1994 and 1997. Glavine played first base and captained the 1995 team and also played on the 1994 NCAA Tournament team. Glavine, who is the brother of 10-time All-Star Tom Glavine of the New York Mets, was recently inducted into the Northeastern University Hall of Fame.
