Item Description
Stemming from customs established in medieval Europe, families often provided a specially made wooden box or trunk to their daughters to store special articles. Traditionally, mothers taught their daughters at an early age how to knit, embroider, sew, and crochet in preparation for marriage. Young women, dreaming of their wedding day, started a collection of special items, including hand-embroidered linens, towels, aprons, quilts, and other handicrafts and storing them for the future in a special chest, which became a symbol of hope for the future. The new bride then brought her Hope Chest to her new home on her wedding day, and these items became part of her new household. Although times have changed (and we are not necessarily advocating a return to earlier practices), furniture modeled in the style and shape of a traditional hope chest is still a welcome addition to any home décor.
The Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau invites you to bid on this hope chest, made by the students in the Construction Tech Program at the Buckeye Career Center in New Philadelphia, Ohio. It is handmade of solid oak raise panels, with a cedar lining and a gold hickory stain. The chest is approximately 2' x 4' - stands 21" high.
