Item Description
“Savannah” from Jamaica
The Broadway Bears was an annual auction of one-of-a-kind, museum-quality, theatrically costumed teddy bears, each dressed in a handmade, authentic recreation of the original costume design and signed by the star who made the character famous. After a successful 15-year run, The Broadway Bears held its final auction in 2012.
This “Savannah Bear” was re-gifted to us by its original winning bidder.
A tribute to the one and only Lena Horne, our Savannah bear comes from Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg’s 1957 musical Jamaica. Lena captivated audiences as she sang and danced the Calypso at the Imperial Theatre and this outfit beautifully recreates the designs by original costumer Miles White. This bear made her appearance in 2000 at the third annual auction and was designed by Mark Ruffin. She is signed by Miles White and the incomparable Lena Horne.
