About the Artist

Henry V. Miller was born December 26, 1891 in Yorkville, NYC. His parents were from Germany, his mother from the north, his father from Bavaria. He lived in Brooklyn during his school years. He tried working in his father's tailor shop which is where he developed his love of fine clothes.

He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of 'novel' that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism, one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also fictional. As a writer, his most characteristic works of this kind are "Tropic of Cancer""Tropic of Capricorn" and "Black Spring".

"The Waters Reglitterized""The Angel is my Watermark""To Paint is to Love Again""Paint as you Like and Die Happy" are all books about Henry Miller's love of painting.

He first became interested in the 1920's when walking in NYC with a friend, Emil Schnellock, who was an artist. They stopped in front of a gallery window where Turner was displayed - Miller was enthralled. Emil started him off by lending him brushes and encouraging him to paint.

Miller painted mainly watercolors, turning out several thousand in his lifetime. He painted for pleasure, enjoying the process of creating. His paintings were shown in exhibitions in the U.S., Japan and Europe.

Many of his watercolors were printed as lithographs, usually in editions of 250 - 300 prints. Miller would have them stacked on his ping pong table taking time in the day to sign and number them. He was pleased that people liked his paintings and would give them to friends and admirers.
