This multi-medium creation is inspired by Alice Through the Looking Glass, and is appropriately set against a repurposed Victorian mirror. Fourth grade classmates were randomly dealt cards written with the various characters and objects found within the novel, and used a shape simplification/abstraction method to render and define forms. These inspired creations were then re-formatted by the artist, and set against the backdrop of the mirror; providing an appropriately Carollian balance between the contributions of both child and adult, and further suggesting the thematic play on reflectivity found throughout the novel. Through the Looking Glass takes place in a land that greatly resembles a game of chess. The actions of the characters, indeed the very plot of the book, reflect the rules and play of an actual chess game. Use of marbled paper as a decorative embellishment (also made by our fourth graders) further hints at the Victorian aesthetic of which Lewis Carroll was so very fond.
