Congressional Cemetery is a 35 acre historic burial ground located on Capitol Hill in Southeast Washington, DC. Initially known as the Washington Parish Burial Ground, Congressional became the first truly national burial ground as Congress bought sites, buried noted civil servants. More than 55,000 burials have taken place here. The cemetery is the resting place of more than 55,000. The tour will include a visit to a 1903 chapel and a look at the public vault that once was the home to John Quincy Adams, Dolly Madison, Zachary Taylor and William Henry Harrison. Paul Williams, well-known to many of us for his writing of house-histories, is now the President of Congressional Cemetery. For 10 individuals, he will lead a private tour of insider information with a picnic lunch provided by Villager Abigail Wiebenson.
