Item Description
Living Treasures of Hawaii: 25th Anniversary of the Selections of Outstanding Persons as Honored By the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai'i.
"A quarter century ago the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawai'i began a program of honoring very special people in Hawai'i, naming them "Living Treasures". These were people who had contributed to the community, whose very lives were inspirational. On the 25th anniversary of this program, these lives are offered in a single book.
Here are artists and entertainers, weavers and potters, scholars and musicians. But "Living Treasures" are found not only among the famous, so here too are a woodsman and a fisherman, a nurse and a sailor. The commonality these people share is their selflessness, for their lives have not been spent in seeking rewards but in merely seeking to serve.
There are easily recognizable names here, but also people who were never in the spotlight but always in the hearts of those who knew them. Many are elderly, some have passed on. Some will continue to be treasured by Hawai'i because it is their nature to spend their lives in honest work. This book is about them and for them."
