Item Description
Emily Abramson is a teacher at the Newburgh High School where she has been teaching Italian.
My greatest passion of the last 20 years outside of my entry into motherhood has been cultural and linguistic exploration. Between the years of 1997 and 2006, I studied and lived abroad in Paris, France, Tuscany, Italy, and Santiago, Chile, all through avenues I pursued independently. I have also spent anywhere from two weeks to two months in: Ireland, Israel, China, and Northern India. In Chile and China, I worked as a teacher for corporate adults and middle-school aged kids, respectively.
In 2010, while in graduate school in pursuit of an M.A. in Romance Languages, I had a strong urge to teach again and subsequently began my post as the Italian teacher at New Paltz High School. I had big plans and dreams of overhauling the foreign language department and creating abroad experiences for the Juniors and Seniors, to ensure that they wouldn't get bogged down in the grammatical quagmire of beginning a language. New Paltz didn't nuture my vision or support the kind of educator I am, but Newburgh Free Academy, my current post, does. My plans for overhaul now encompass public education as an entire entity, so I'm now finishing my Masters in Humanistic and Multicultural Education, while working full-time and raising 3 young daughters. I still tutor and offer small courses for adults in Italian, French, and Spanish during the summer.
