Item Description
This ball was part of the handprint ball display in the BJC. As a graduating senior Shep's handprint basketball was removed, signed by him and donated to the CVC auction.
In his senior season (2017-18) Shep posted the best field goal percentages of his career at 43.3 (3-point) and 44.4 (overall). His 336 career total 3-point field goals made is second on the Big Ten career list in that category. At the end of the season, that total was fifth on the NCAA Division I active career leaders list. His 2017-18 total of 120 3-point field goals made stands as Big Ten and Penn State single-season record. He eclipsed the 1,600-point mark and finished his tenure with 1,629 points for fifth on the Penn State career scoring list.
Shep Garner's impact on the Penn State Basketball program is bigger than his point productivity. He was the link to Roman Catholic High School. As Coach Chambers said, “D.J. [Newbill] opened the door [to recruiting in Philadelphia], but Shep threw that thing wide open. “He also opened the door to Roman for us. He obviously helped us recruit Tony, Lamar [Stevens] and Naz [Bostick].”
As his senior season began, he indicated that the year wasn't going to be about his individual accomplishments. “You want to leave the program better than when you came into it,” Garner said in October. “You want to leave a winner.” He added, "Of course you care about your legacy, but it's more about the team and what we do as a group."
