Item Description
Book One: "Trails: From Steppingstones to Kerbstones"
By Russell A. Apple
Bernice P. Bishop Museum Special Publication 53.
Copyright 1965. Second printing.
Excerpt from foreword: "This research on Hawaiian land routes, that the pattern of the ancient trails through the Honaunau area might be reconstructed, is a trail blazer on two counts. First, it focuses attention on a feature of Hawaiian culture which has been all but overlooked. Second, it enables us to identify the old, the older, and the prehistoric trails and to know where to find them."
Book Two: "Hawaiian Petroglyphs"
By J. Halley Cox with Edward Stasack
Bernice P. Bishop Museum Special Publication 60.
Copyright 1970.
Excerpt from foreword: "Mr. Cox participated in field trips sponsored jointly by Bishop Museum and the University of Hawaii, Manoa and Hilo Campus teams, when they were surveying the large petroglyph fields at Puako, Anaehoomalu, and Puuloa on the island of Hawaii between 1954 and 1960. He did much of the detailed mapping and recording. Because of this experience and his intimate knowledge of numerous other petroglyph areas throughout the islands, he is able to look upon them from the view of an archaeologist and enthnographers as well as of a professor of art. Mr. Stasack reinforces his thesis that petroglyphs are of significance as a universal artistic manifestation which, at the same time, helped to put man on the road to writing through the development of symbols. Both authors have a lively appreciation of the genius of the Hawaiians to depict, in a few bold lines, themselves, their animals, and meaningful objects in their culture."
