From Douglas:
Television, comic books, comic strips and any printed media have always been a part of my life. As far as I can remember, my days and nights were filled with images of nature and anthropomorphic beings, creatures inside an electronic picture box that conveyed a world of dream and fantasy. I may not submerse myself in television or the lost art of printed comic strips as often anymore, but the images continue to linger within the subconscious parts of my mind. Cartoons always fascinated me, they were able to accomplish feats that defied the laws of physics and distorted reality. Characters that inhabit my subconscious come to life on surface where their thoughts and growing awareness of their own consciousness flourish in their limited and conversely, boundless world. My work echo back the nostalgia and experiences of my youth, when children were allowed to play outside, to explore the boundless world and come home alone without reservation or fear. A childhood filled with organically educational human interaction, animated shows and completely absent of hours and days glued to an iMachine. And my work also addresses the connection of my characters to my reality and other realities within their own world, this idea harps back to the stories of Lewis Caroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland or Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower”, whose characters struggle to find a bridge that connects all our worlds.
My goal is to bring together the amalgam of ideas and experiences of my childhood, what I believed a more simpler time void of the responsibilities of adulthood, and where time felt infinite. While addressing cartoon, nature and animals as a constant theme of my work.
