Item Description
This once in a lifetime “Behind the Counter at Benkyodo” experience is for up to six people. Your group will go behind the scenes to learn about the history of Benkyodo; discover what manju/sweets they currently make and how they are prepared. Your party of six will also have the opportunity to make a few pieces to taste and take home.
Depending on date and availability, your group will have the opportunity to meet third-generation owners Ricky and Bobby Okamura and/or their fourth-generation trainee and relative who will guide you through this never before, and possibly never again, shared experience.
During a tour of the operations (baking/steaming/cooking) area, you will see how a batch of habutai manju (steamed rice cake with smooth red bean filling) is made from start to finish. Once the mochiko and sugar are steamed and mixed, you will have the opportunity to make your own. Each guest will make approximately 8-10 pieces with a variety of fillings available to try. Fillings will include: koshi-an (smooth red bean), tsubu-an (whole red bean), shiro-an (white lima bean), blueberry shiro-an and possibly a few others depending on timing and availability.

Restrictions: Winner must confirm a mutually agreed upon date at least three weeks in advance. Available only on a Tuesday-Wednesday afternoon between 1:00-4:00 p.m. This experience will last approximately 90 minutes and will be scheduled to end no later than 4:00 p.m. Participants must be 5 years or older. Expires June 30, 2019.
The winning bidder may pick up the items at the Center during normal business hours, or arrange shipping via U.S. Mail at standard industry rates at the winning bidder’s expense. All items must be claimed within 1 month of notification. Unclaimed items may be placed back up for auction with no refund to the winning bidder.
