Framed Original Watercolor

Ian Kennelly

No matter whether I am looking at the urban landscape, industrial zones, construction sites, baseball games, sweet treats from the kitchen, or even still lifes constructed from the leftovers and debris of any of these locations, I am excited to draw and paint or create images/objects with mixed media. All of these objects and forms are wonderful hangers to drape with the formal aspects of painting and drawing. Beyond the pleasing interplay of color and form, line and value I look to give the viewer a vague narrative or a small smirk of humor. Other times I challenge the viewer to see the beauty in aesthetically contradictory objects or landscapes, what a fellow artist called ‘exposing the grace in the brut.’ In all the work, though the compositions are based on real objects and views, I don’t push the material to make the image look too “realistic” but yet I want them recognizable. This achieved by allowing tool marks to show and paint to build up, leaving evidence of the process.

In recent years I have branched out considerably to try other media. I have begun using LEGO both as a sculpture material and as jewelry. A show last year pushed me to explore collage, something I have thoroughly enjoyed as it allows me to use all the great found materials I collect including scraps of paper, beach finds and cigar boxes.

My latest project, The Random Art Vending Machine, has been a fun sideline to engage guests in both the gift of giving and receiving art. The Machine is a small repurposed vending machine that dispenses a small wooden tile (1x 2.5 x 3.5inches) with a random picture I or others have created for $0.25. When appropriate for the venue I make available materials for guests to create small works of art that are then dispensed to other guests throughout the year.

In the end I hope you the viewer enjoys looking at the work as much as I enjoy making it.
