2019 FESTIVAL
Join Glimmerglass in 2019, as it offers new productions that explore themes of transformation and revolution. With music spanning more than 100 years, including a world premiere by acclaimed composer Jeanine Tesori, the season offers the opportunity to rediscover favorites and witness a landmark production.
SHOW BOAT Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II
As the Cotton Blossom docks in Mississippi, follow Cap’n Andy Hawks and his extended family on a journey of love and heartbreak. Revolutionary for its exploration of serious themes such as racism, Show Boat blends humanity and humor with plenty of hit tunes including “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” and “Make Believe.”
LA TRAVIATA Giuseppe Verdi/Francesco Maria Piave
The Parisian courtesan Violetta leaves a life of extravagance and frivolity when she falls in love with Alfredo. But soon she is forced to make a terrible choice. With showpiece arias such as “Sempre libera” and its touching story, La traviata is one of the most beloved works in the operatic canon. After 10 years, the opera returns to the Glimmerglass stage in a stunning co-production with Washington National Opera.
THE GHOSTS OF VERSAILLES John Corigliano/William M. Hoffman
In this hilarious nod to The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, the ghost of Marie Antoinette is upset about her untimely ending, so her favorite playwright, Beaumarchais, attempts to amuse her with a new work. He produces an opera within an opera starring Figaro, Count Almaviva and Susanna, who try to save the queen from her beheading in a fast-moving and tuneful production.
BLUE (WORLD PREMIERE)
Jeanine Tesori/Tazewell Thompson
In Harlem, a black man in a blue police officer’s uniform and his wife are tested when their teenage son’s life is taken. In this intimate look at the reality of an unimaginable loss, we see a loving community of fellow police officers, friends and church console and galvanize the couple as they navigate prejudice and grief.
