Item Description
TITLE OF PIECE: 'Autumn Song'
INSPIRATION FOR THE PIECE - ARTIST NEUROSCIENTIST MATCH UP:
Caroline Stanley with the Branch Out funded project of Wesley Vuong of the University of Alberta
"Exploring the Cognitive and Electrophysiological Effects of Oxygen in Humans"
This work reminds us of the experience of being in crisp and fresh autumn air (all 2 weeks of it in Alberta). The University of Alberta study looked at how breathing air with extra-high levels of oxygen could affect the way our brain's work. Who knew the air around us could be so healing - the implications of this project apply to both clinical use of oxygen in surgical settings as well as using oxygen as its own neuroCAM therapy.
ARTIST BIO:
In December 1984, Caroline May Stanley emerged in Cape Town, South Africa and shortly after was relocated to Calgary, AB, which remains home today. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2007, with a major in painting.
Apart from her canine subjects, Caroline has always been a curious explorer and is fascinated by colour, pattern and detail found in nature. While most people would be enjoying a spectacular view, Caroline is likely to be found hovering around a tree trunk or kneeling by a lake. Her paintings capture these intimate encounters with nature in saturated realism, creating a surface to explore and experience things often overlooked.
Your Brain on Art is particularly meaningful to Caroline as an artist who has experienced depression and anxiety and is eager to understand innovative research in brain health.
