We'd like to introduce you to our friend, King. And we need your help to make him feel like a King again.

King arrived at RCHS on May 1. He was surrendered to us by someone who found him and kept him for a month but could no longer take care of him. When King arrived he was in pretty rough shape. Poor fella. He was really greasy and pretty much had no hair. His front right leg was going in a few different directions. He wasn't neutered yet, either. He's a young fella, maybe 10 months old. He looks like a Pit Bull/Great Dane/Labrador mix. You know, one of those hard to tell mixed breed dogs. He is black and white. Adorable.

He quickly got a bath and then had an appointment at a veterinarian. Turns out he had mange so we quickly started treating that. As the days went on, his fur started growing in and he was feeling much better. We knew he had a long road ahead with his leg, so we decided going to a foster home would be best for him so off he went. 

At the same time, as we started the process of vaccinating King, microchipping him, and doing everything else we do before dogs go up for adoption, we found out that King is heartworm positive. Oh boy. That is going to be about a 4-month treatment to make sure he is heartworm free at the end. He has currently started the treatment for his heartworm. 

We also needed to have his leg looked at to figure out how to proceed so we could fix it so he will no longer be in pain and can run around and play as a young dog should. He ended up having a bunch of x-rays and it turns out his elbow doesn't fit properly in addition to needing to have corrective surgery for his leg. So had successful surgery on August 5th. He is now in foster care and is recovering well.

Following surgery, he will need to stay quiet to allow for proper healing which fortunately lines up with his heartworm treatment.  We keep telling him that one of these days he'll be able to romp and play without being uncomfortable and this will all be worth it.  He is being a great sport about it. 

As you can imagine, the bills for King are adding up. And will continue to add up. Mange. Heartworm positive. Leg and elbow surgery. He needs to be neutered, too. 

We canââ€â™t figure out how one young fella has so many things going on but he does. And he needs your help. The bills for all of King's care will likely exceed $8,500. We are working with wonderful veterinarians around the state and they have given us generous discounts to help King out. But there are still costs to all of this. 

Will you help us help King? Your donations will be used for his x-rays, bloodwork, surgery, pain medications, heartworm treatment, recovery, and everything else that he will need. And if we are fortunate to raise more money than we need, we will use it for other animals, like King, who needs special care. And we do get animals like that frequently. Although King is an exception with so much going on. 

His foster parents have adored him and we all look forward to a happy future for King and with your help, he will get there.
