This original artwork was created for Art on Science: 26 études an internattional portfolio featuring pictures by artists and words by scientists. This written commentary is by Sandra Shefelbine from the Bioengineering Department of Northeastern University:
Bone is an exquisite structural material: strong, tough, and able to adapt to mechanical demands by building more bone, removing existing bone, or altering the direction of growth. I am an engineer and study the mechanics of bones and their “mechanoadaptive” ability. I am currently investigating the shape of the hip in elite adolescent athletes. Practicing specific sports (basketball, ice hockey, and soccer) at a young age, while the bones are still growing, alters the shape of the hip. My research explores the loading on the hips during these sports that might cause altered shape. This image of a hip conveys the complex structure that allows the hip to be strong yet mobile, a shape that is so critical to function.
The scientific method and artistic process are both creative; one creates knowledge, the other creates expression. Both processes start by asking questions: What makes bone strong and tough? How do you portray strong and tough? Both processes require experimentation to reach the end stage: specific experiments to deduce pieces of knowledge, or artistic experiments that explore means of expression. Watching the artistic process that resulted in this painting of a hip, made me appreciate all the experimentation (medium, context, subject) that preceded the final product, which is very similar to all the scientific work (protocols, measurements, experiments) that precede publication of a scientific paper.
