Item Description
Baby Highlander by 48 X48 “ Canvas print stretched on 1.5” stretchers by artist Valerie Shaff
"My photography of animals, which I have been doing for going on three decades now, is a mixture of fascination with my subject, love of being in a preferably damp field smelling the earth and its creatures, my ability to engage my curious subjects, and pure kismet . This Baby Highlander was photographed locally at a farm in Stanfordville. It was a rainy morning. You can see the drizzle in the air. I was smitten and he was curious and the spittle of a bubble on his lips was pure kismet. It was early in my pursuit of environmental animal portraits that I made this one and it is one of the images that assured me that I was on a good track . Technically speaking I photograph this work with film. I use a Hasselblad medium formant camera and shoot black and white film. Originally I used to print analog prints ( you know, in the darkroom ) Now I print scans of the original negatives digitally on canvas . I like to see the subjects large and not behind glass. They seem more present in the space that way."
