Item Description

Charles Spinetta Winery:  2016 Zinfandel

Grown in the Shenandoah Valley in mature, head-prined, dry-farmed vineyards with intense flavor.  Ready to drink now iwth rich, ripe flavors. This Zinfandel expresses its fruitfulness without overwhelming.

Morse Wines and Il Gioiello Winery and Tasting Room:  2014 Primativo

Grown, vinted and bottled in Fiddletown, CA. Italian relative of Zinfandel.  Notes of bright cherry, mocha and smoke with medium tannins.

Venture off the beaten path to our Tuscan inspired tasting room. We promise you will be happy you did. We always have at least 10 of our tasty Rhone and Italian varietals to entice you. Our estate wines have a unique terroir because of our location on a ridge of granitic soils.

These two varietals are genetically the same, yet they are made in different styles.  With these two bottles you can compare both.

Primitivo is Italian and Zinfandel is well known in California.

While they are genetically the same grape, both clones of the Croatian grape Crljenak, the main difference between Primitivo and Zinfandel are the eventual style of both of these wines with terroir and winemaking style affecting the finished product.

Zinfandel is distinctively Californian. Most Californian winemakers allow Zinfandel to ripen with generally high sugar levels, and a higher alcohol content which reduces acid and tannin to make the wine very smooth and sweet. This is typical of New World wines in general.

In contrast, Primitivo hails from Italy, in the heel of Italy’s boot Puglia. There it ripens under the hot Italian sun to create a wine that is well structured, hearty, rich with blackberry, violet and pepper notes. Not as sweet or fruity as its New World counterpart.
