Get ahead of the 2024 Cicada Symphony!

These helpful suggestions are provided by our friends and plant health experts of The Morton Arboretum and Chicago Botanic Gardens:

First of all, no need to panic! Most healthy trees and shrubs will bounce back without much damage.
You DO NOT need to wrap everything! Healthy, established trees will be OK.
As a precaution, wrapping newly planted trees, smaller trees with smaller branches, unique & special specimens, and high valued trees is recommended.

Cicadas lay eggs inside pencil thin branches. Wrapping is to prevent this possible egg damage.
Smaller branches may break or die off after eggs have hatched.

Wrap the entire plant with fine mesh netting like tulle fabric.
Since cicadas emerge from the ground, make sure to cinch the bottom of the trunk and not leave any gaps for the cicadas to crawl up into.
Staple all holes shut. Do not leave any gaps.
As an extra precaution, potted trees and woody shrubs can be moved into a screened porch or balcony, or garage with windows. You can move these back outdoors after the cicada period ends.

Cicadas are projected to emerge around May 15th, 2024.

Now’s the time to add soil and compost! The start of the season is a great time to supplement your beds and containers with new soil and mix in compost.

Not sure of how much soil you need? For containers like window boxes and coco liners, we recommend taking off the top 2in. of soil and replacing it with a new layer of soil. This will help replenish nutrients that have leached out over time. Soil in containers can last around 5 years before you need to replace it all.

Wondering how much compost you need? Our go to ratio for adding compost to soil is 1 part compost to 2 parts soil.

Each planting area requires different needs so come on in and we will help you find the amendment that is right for your soil and plants.

All our soils, composts, mulches, rocks and sand are currently available in our parking lot. And we delivery!
