“Saucido,” from the “Naked Lady: A Dot Red” series, is Blackwood’s Postmodernist visual commentary on the traditional genres of landscape and nude photography re-imaged from a female perspective with a feminist eye.
In this series, the red dot represents a nude in the landscape. These dots are placed by Blackwood to symbolize the placement of a female nude – based on the “male gaze” that has dominated the male/female, nude/landscape power structure dynamic within 20th century photography.
Blackwood writes on the “Naked Lady: A Dot Red” series, “The vernacular image of the ‘figure’ in a landscape is modified to examine the commodification and ubiquitous use of the female form in art and culture.”
Blackwood's “Naked Lady: A Dot Red” series is metaphorical and poetic. Her photography sublimely balances the myth of the American West while emboldening the female role in formulating the narrative in 21st century photography.
