I appreciate the owner responding to my review, nevertheless, I stand on my high expectation of customer service. Liz was completely nasty to me, which was a turn off--and I am not the only customer who has experienced this, as I've read through all reviews on the business. To drive across town, be faced with a terrible disposition, embarrassed in front of a client, AND be charged essentially for a no-show was simply not a great experience for me. Period.
Also, as reported by the owner, I do not recall cancelling two appointments prior to, but I digress. Despite all this, I maintain that Liz is a great stylist and obviously has a cult following. So my review cannot disparage the business or taint the views of current, loyal clientele. Potential clients should be aware of what they can face, however, because life does happen, and being armed with information is paramount to making an educated choice as a consumer.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Hello Nikk,
Just like you Nikk, I anticipate courtesy and a better overall client/stylist experience with ANY client I work with. At our first appointment in January, we established a regiment that involved you checking in monthly to ensure your hair is on track and if there needs to be any modification to your at home routine. You scheduled appointments for February and March. Both were cancelled the day before the actual appointment right before you would incur a cancellation fee (please refer to photo). You even reached out to me early in March to say how excited you were about your appointment and that you were considering sister locs, but it would be sometime next year (please refer to photo). Imagine my surprise when you show up 5 minutes before (NOT 15 minutes as you claim) and ask “is this going to be a problem?” I answered this would definitely be a problem. I do not offer take down of braids or faux locs as a part of my services FOR A REASON. The fact that you wouldn't email or call to give advanced notice that your hair was "unprepared" showed your lack of courtesy.
Saturday slots are highly coveted so if you would have told me in advance, per my policy IF I was able to fill your slot and reschedule you, I could have applied your fee towards your next service since I didn’t lose the seat. But I wasn’t given that “courtesy”. You had every right to ask if the fee could be waived and I have every right to refuse service and charge the cancellation fee because the service could not be performed due to you being “unprepared or whatever you’d like to call it.“ You weren’t even remorseful. You just showed up with the expectations of making me take out your faux locs and styling your hair or getting the fee waived and you did not once apologize. While as business owners we wish to show appreciation for our clients and live by the “the customer is always right” credo, often this mentality really leaves business owners feeling like we have to kow-tow at the expense of our livelihood. I post my policies clearly on my page. All of my policies, especially, cancellation policies are not in place to punish clients, but to protect us business owners. We simply ask that you respect our time as much we appreciate your business. I take my craft very seriously and thank you for saying I am “a good stylist who cares about hair—super important” and you were very happy with your hair care services. I think that it is unfortunate that you attempt to disparage my reputation and tarnish my business with your low review yet with everything stated here, clearly your actions and lack of courtesy were the cause of the issue.
If you felt like you can “receive comparable or superior hair maintenance” at your home salon then why book a 2nd, 3rd and 4th time? I thank you for brief patronage and wish you the best of luck with your home salon.Mar 20, 2018Previous reviewI anticipated courtesy and a better overall customer experience as a new client. A friend recommended Liz so I reached out to ask a couple of questions beforehand. She responded promptly so I proceeded. During my appointment I received a trim, treatment, and she flat ironed my natural hair. A bit pricey but not a complete biggie. All was well.
My issue came with the second appointment. I had faux locs installed that I was unable to take down due to being slammed schedule-wise. To be fair, I should have let her know this in advance. I arrived 15 minutes before our time and Liz refused to take the appointment since "she doesn't take down extensions and it's not even included in her service list." Okay, cool. Considering I had only been to her for one appointment and do not periodically peruse salon price lists as a hobby, I thought it would be reasonable to request a courtesy waive of the cancellation fee that Liz said she'd have to charge. Like, where is the grace here? I did show up for the appointment (albeit unprepared or whatever you'd like to call it). But still, she denied the accommodation. I understand this is completely her prerogative as a business owner, but I was put off by it plus her general disposition about the circumstance. Liz is a good stylist and cares about hair--super important. I was happy up until that point but the customer service game can stand to be upped a notch.
Breakdown: 1 star off for price point--I can pay these rates and receive comparable or superior hair maintenance, plus refreshments, and customer appreciation at my home salon. Sometimes you've gotta stick with what you know! 2 stars off for customer service: refusing to accommodate a client and being flippant about it is quite rude. It's not always in the "what" but the "how". So, no. I won't be a future patron. - Ksills S.New York, NY08Sep 16, 2021
The second worst experience we had. If you walk in, expect to walk out having paid much extra than planned. I swear to you. As if we are getting charged for breathing. Unbelievable!!!

I'm so sorry you or your daughter/mother feel this way. Not sure who to address because the person who's name is on the appointment is not the woman I serviced. The woman I serviced left so happy, she wanted to schedule out her appointments but my books were not opened yet. So I'm surprised by the 1 star review as it pertains to it being "the second worst experience". If the 1 star review pertains to paying "$100 extra than planned", she was also informed of AND agreed to the price for additional services. Otherwise, she could have refused. No one was forced or "up charged" on any service. In the future I urge you both to find a stylist that fits your price point. There are so many on styleseat and Yelp to choose from. I thank you for your feedback and wish you both the best.

Deceptive pricing structure. I went here because it was in the neighborhood and the shop was cute. Reviews were good. I went in for a $60 silk press and somehow ended up being charged for a "hair cut" after she trimmed my ends and I ended up paying over $170. My silk press lasted all of a week, if that.
She kept trying to sell me products from the shop when I asked for upkeep advice. It was just a lot. She's super nice and talented but I won't be going back.
I'm giving a 2 for the pricing and a 4 for the hair.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Jazmin,
Thank you so much for taking the time out to write your review. I want to apologize if you feel the pricing structure was deceptive. After receiving similar criticism a few years ago I’ve made it a point to be forthcoming with pricing before performing any services so the client knows what they are paying for and can determine if they want to move forward. Although you’ve visited once in February of 2017, after locating and reviewing your receipt (refer to photo) I am certain that the same courtesy was given to you, especially since a yelp check in discount was applied. I have changed the pricing structure since you’ve visited and continue to work on it so that pricing is as transparent as possible.
As far as trying to sell you products, it is never been my practice to force products on anyone. As a matter of fact I only keep products in house at the request of my clients out of convenience for them. If anything, I usually suggest that my clients at the very least continue to use their own products to determine if there’s any difference in the way their hair feels from what I use and then make a decision. But again, your appointment was well over a year ago so it’s hard to remember exactly what our interaction was like.
It’s unfortunate that your experience has kept you from coming back but I respect your decision.
Best Wishes,

I called Friday morning and made an appointment for Tuesday after. I was schedule for a virgin relaxer, cut, and style when she said it would cost $250 I almost hung up an said thank you for your time, but I booked anyways.
It's a very small salon with a nice atmosphere. Before learning my hair Liz asked me if I was sure that I wanted to relax my hair. The relaxer was so great and didn't even burn or smell she probably could've left it in there all day. Soon she washed, conditioned and put me under a steam dryer next she cut and style. Though the appointment took way longer than expected the time and price was well worth it. Added some photos to show how versatile my cut is and how wonderful the perm has left my hair.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Marsha B.Brooklyn, NY6841Jul 29, 2016
The aesthetic of the salon is very lovely. Based on the owners suggestion she complained about my hair being uneven so she suggested to cut my hair that was past my shoulders and give me a asymmetrical haircut. Short in the back and longer in the front. Based on this hair cut my hair was up to my neck. She flat ironed my hair and it lasted about 3 days. My blowouts usually last a week and a half. So I was not really happy about that. I actually liked the hair cut at first but when my hair started growing back it just grew back so weird. The back of my hair would not stay flat. It took a few months for my hair to not stick up.
So the moral of the story never let a complete stranger who does not knows the history of your hair give you a hair cut. My hair grows longer and faster on one side.
What I gather from Liz is she is very passionate about hair and hair care however she comes off unknowingly rude. And clearly she is about her money. While your adding in a service she will literally stop you and say this is an add on and it cost that much. When her phone rings she doesn't even exchange pleasantries she goes straight for her fee and if your not ready she hangs up the phone.
Pros: passionate about hair and hair care
Cons: not personable to clients, and rudeHelpful 10Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Thank you so much for your feedback Marsha. I appreciate the time you took into writing your review. As an advent Yelper myself I understand the need to express and share ones experience in order to inform others.
I'm grateful that you can tell how passionate I am about healthy hair. I take it very serious. After 20 yrs in this industry I've come to realize that healthy hair is the most important thing to me since I've seen thousands of women do things to unknowingly destroy their hair. I do hope that anyone coming to me shares that same commitment to health and restoring their hair.
Most hair does not grow at the same length. Sometimes the left grows faster. Sometimes it's the front or the middle. So my goal as a hairstylist is to get hair as cohesive as possible while removing "unwanted" and "unhealthy" ends. I make it a point to assess all my clients hair and give them my recommendation. I am a stickler for symmetry and will always suggest my best solution in order to create as cohesive of a cut as possible to achieve that symmetry. I sometimes even take photos to give a clearer picture of what I see and how I would like to achieve these results to ensure its to my client's liking. I often compromise since I understand how length is of great importance as well.
As far as the grow out is concerned, judging by the way you explained your hair cut it is quite possible that you experienced an awkward period while your hair grew out because of the density in the back. When I cut hair, majority of the time it's to ensure that the hair is at the healthiest, fullest length possible. So if the back would not "stay flat" as you put it, it's as a result of the fullness of your hair and the ends not being thin. And if "it took a few months for your hair not to stick up" chances are its because it grew out and it's back to the length we initially started from, only fuller.
When flat ironing a clients hair, I will not pass the flat iron multiple times or at high temperatures if I am not familiar with their hair or if it's dry. It's something I do to reduce heat damage. Especially if they did not get a steam treatment. Excessive flat ironing removes moisture from hair which is essentially what causes heat damage. And if a client's hair shows signs of dryness as well, chances are their hair will revert faster do to lack of moisture. This is one of the reasons why I recommend steam treatments with any shampoo service.
My approach to hair is very straightforward. For that I make no apologies. I am not interested in misleading anyone. If you have read the review threads it has been said that I have not been upfront about my prices although they all can be found on my Styleseat page. So I make it a point to let clients know the cost of any service that was not booked directly by them on Styleseat so that there isn't any sticker shock once the service and bill is rendered. I wouldn't say that I'm "about my money" as much as I'm about transparency. At the end of it all you as the client have the final say and I can not and will not do anything that you do not willingly agree to.
The salon atmosphere is very intimate. Besides myself, it's my assistant and one other stylist on the weekends. We do our best to ensure all clients of LizLovesHair have a wonderful experience. Sometimes we dropped the ball on that. For that I do apologize. Of the hundred of phone calls we answer, 75% of callers jump straight into "how much does..." So again, I prefer to get straight to their point so I can bring my focus back to my clients. I try not to answer calls when I'm working but sometimes it's out of my control.
Again I thank you so much for your review and will take all of your concerns into consideration for future clients. Take care. - 47429989Nov 19, 2012First to Review
My stylist Sharntai recently moved to this salon - and I'm ecstatic about the new place. The ambiance is great - very relaxing and boutique-like, and most importantly, it's accommodating. For the quality of haircare, maintenance, and styling I received, the prices are more than reasonable.
This is definitely going to be my new sanctuary on Saturday for true R&R.
Very impressive and I am more than satisfied with my hair experience here.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Katrina J.Brooklyn, NY564Apr 14, 2018
I thought I posted this back in February but apparently it was in my drafts but here you go!...
I honestly haven't read much of the reviews but I know that the average is high. I've only been in this establishment no more than 3 minutes. I really wish the owner would be a little more selective in who she has servicing others in her place of business. This review is not for Liz but for Stacee Flood. Ms Flood is a talented hair braider. I found out about her through a friend. My only daughter's first birthday is coming up so naturally, I decided to want braids. I booked Ms. Flood via Style seat a week prior for Friday at 6pm. The night before I ended up in the ER with what seemed to be the flu. I tried to cancel but a notification popped up stating that if I complete the LATE cancellation, I'll have to pay $50. That's a bit much BUT I guess that's what you have to do so people will not waste your time, COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD. I do not have money to waste so I contacted Ms. Flood, I kindly asked her if there was anything we can do and I recieved no response. So, naturally, I tried my best to feel better to gain strength to go get my hair done, I arrived to the place on time and I was told that there was someone in my spot!!!! How is there someone in my seat when I didn't cancel my appointment via style seat?????????? So her response was.... "you said that you were canceling!!!"... I never said I was canceling and if she had responded to my text we could've discussed maybe rescheduling etc... but I kept my calm and asked if she took my deposit she said no... LONG STORY SHORT... she did not respond to my msg because not only if I had canceled last minute will I be charged 50bucks BUT if i didn't show up at all (which is what she was hoping) I would've been charged over 100 bucks for the whole hair style! Thank God I showed up... and she's a liar because not 5minutes after I left her vial presence, did I receive an email stating my cancellation!!! LOL she really hoped that I didn't show. That's not how you conduct business. But I remained polite and exited the place. There's always another braider no more than 15min or even BETTER than you! Remain humble sweetie! I really thought she was a kind spirit judging by her social media posts! Had me fooled!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tesaen C.Brooklyn, NY1514Dec 30, 2015
This is a long review - so if you don't want to read it, I'll quickly summarize for you - she's an amazing stylist who will slay and lay your hair all goddamn day. Go invest in your hair and see Liz.
Picture this - it's the day before NYE, and you know damn well you have a party to go to, yet you over here sleeping on making that appt with your stylist to get your mane looking right. Of course, I kept telling myself that I was gonna find the time to do it myself, but then waited until the day before to "treat myself" to a certified stylist who would slay slay slay the hell out of my hair. Given my once-in-a-while stylist was completely booked, and having to acknowledge the stress behind getting my very dense, semi-long, natural hair done - I spent more than 2 hours reviewing all the stylists in my area on yelp who seemed to specialize in black hair.
I called about 5 salons and only 2 had availability for a last minute, same day press. I happily selected Liz based on her glowing reviews. Turns out, I made the right decision.
Walked in and the the first thing I noticed was Liz's BEAUTIFUL hair. Like cry to the gods, beg, plead, borrow, and steal... and you still won't have that hair kinda hair. She was giving us some Ms. Ross all day with that hair, hunty. Turns out - it's a wig. SHE CREATES WIGS (that's on my christmas list for next year btw in case anyone wants to make that happen).
The next thing you notice is the room full of absolutely stunning black women, all rocking healthy and luscious natural hair. Yaaassss, hunty, yaaaaassssss. Now, her assistants were relaxed, so clearly she caters to all walks of hair - all I do know is that everyone in there was rocking the hell out of their hair. Always a good sign.
Then you notice the small set up. One that shows the owner will most likely only be catering to you when its your turn to be in the chair. #winning.
Liz gave me a silk press that literally had me in her chair about to weep. She also gave me a healthy trim, and did a quick curl that had me flipping my head all damn night. Also, she made a point about these curls making it easier to wrap my hair at the end of the night. Guess what. Per usual, she was right. Just wrapped my hair in about 3.6 seconds. #stillwinning
Do keep in mind - her assistants are in training, so there may be a bit of tugging on your hair when they are detangling. I did ask them to detangle in a certain way as I'm a bit tender headed and they were fully accommodating. At some point, Liz had to step in and finish detangling my hair, which smoothed out the process.
Lastly, I thought my price was definitely fair given the amount of hair I have. I was charged $60 + tip for the press and curl. She threw the trim in as a late christmas present I guess, and I'm fully appreciative. Please do yourself a favor and book some time with Liz as soon as humanly possible. Like this weekend. Or next week. Or every week for the next year.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Alexandra W.Manhattan, NY392816Mar 3, 2014
If you are looking to get your hair LAID (both natural and ya weave)??? Then you MUST go to Lizloveshair and see my girl Liz!!! I stumbled upon Liz thanks to a referral by my hubby and I must say it was the best tip ever... I came to her with my natural hair in dire straits ... my edges were eaten out... my hair wouldn't grow... my natural hair needed despite help... The one thing I remember about our initial consultation was she told me she was more concerned with getting my natural hair back to a healthy state. She took the time to explain what treatments were necessary and basically gave me a plan of action for my hair... As analytical as I am by nature that was a great help... I was always apart of the process.
While taking care of of my natural hair... My weaves were stepped up to a level 10... Now I've beem rocking a weave for many years... no shame in my game!!! But Liz has evelvated my look to a whole totally different level. I've never been disappointed and every time I leave I feel like a renewed woman... When Liz does my hair I feel whole again lol.
She is AMAZING at what she does... And fyi you can purchase hair from her as well... I've purchased several bundles (both straight & curly...
Black & colored by her as well) and I am still using them (we are almost a year in). If you go to her for your weave maintenance your hair will last!!! Trust me!!!
Liz is an amazing talent and I'm glad she hold me down and keeps me looking as fabulous as I do!!!
Go see her!!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Valdora E.New York, NY02Aug 12, 2015
Let me start by saying that Liz did a great job on my hair.
BUT - beware of her pricing structure! Let's put it this way, I went in for a $45 flat iron job and walked out with a $150 bill. BEFORE tip. Somehow a hair trim (she's calling it a cut) and a moisturizing treatment (which was never verified prior to application with me) came up to an extra $105. Now I've had my hair done several times in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Virginia, and elsewhere. NEVER have I ever been charged such an absurd amount for something relatively standard.
Pro Tip: make sure to ask pricing before assuming that it'll be within standard local pricing (as I did). Or else you'll be unpleasantly surprised.
Her pricing structure smacks a tad bit of deception.
Overall, 5 stars for the hair and 2 for pricing
Honestly though? There are quite a few other salons that are as good and have much better prices.Helpful 28Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
