Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is
reducing the risk to the environment posed by Hanford’s 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored in 158 underground tanks.

Since its construction in 1977, the 242-A Evaporator has removed more than 81 million gallons of liquid to create storage space in double-shell tanks at the Hanford Site. Now, after spending the past five years upgrading the facility, we’re preparing for another campaign to free up space in support of future waste retrievals. Once the contractor readiness assessment is complete, the Department of Energy will conduct an assessment before the Evaporator begins a new waste-volume reduction campaign.
