From Dive BVI

A brave group of divers joined us for a trip out to dive the Chikuzen wreck yesterday. The mooring ball is gone so we had to find the wreck and then anchor safely alongside the wreck. Jumping in, Jeff had a reef shark welcome him and then cruise along the structures for a bit. Big stingrays were a highlight for the divers and loads of snappers and grunts as well.

SPECIAL TRIP ALERT: Friday, May 17th - We are going out to dive the Chikuzen wreck.

The Chikuzen was a 246 foot refrigerator vessel based in St. Maarten back in the 1980s. It was used as a dock to service big Korean fishing fleets. It was early in 1981 when a hurricane was approaching St. Maarten. The government told the owners to move the decrepit ship so it wouldn’t sink in the harbor or damage the docks.

The owners thought this would be a good chance to get rid of the ship once and for all. The owners set the ship on fire and sent it adrift, hoping it would sink just offshore. The smoldering vessel went adrift and ended up in the British Virgin Islands, and very close to running aground near Marina Cay. Later towed out to sea, it eventually sank about 7 miles northwest of Virgin Gorda. Resting in 75 feet of water far from any reef, the Chikuzen is a magnet for marine life as there are no reef structures around for miles!

Recommended Diver Level: Advanced
Conditions: Can be swelly at surface and have strong current

Come join us for an amazing dive on a piece of BVI diving history!
