On a perfectly calm Friday morning in the middle of May, not far from the Grand Marais municipal marina, retired school teacher Art Kidd is making final preparations to launch his custom-built houseboat into the scenic harbor.

Two women walking their dog in the campground stop to chat, and they understand the significance of this day. "That's the sign of summer around here, when that goes out there." Art Kidd agrees. "When the houseboat goes in, summer will start."

Art and Beth Kidd moved to Cook County in the early 70’s, marking almost 5 decades of off-grid living. Their committment to sustainable energy on the land has carried over to their life on the water, which is evident in the name of their boat, the H.M.S. Pontoon. "Home-Made Solar power Pontoon," says Kidd.

Mayor Benson on the Grand Marais City Hall Demolition

The Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais is currently presenting an exhibit entitled, Species of Special Concern, presented by Minnesota artist Tanya Piatz. The exhibit runs from April 26 to May 19. She is also presenting an artist talk on her work Thursday, May 16 starting at 5 p.m.

Piatz, a self-taught artist, works to capture conservation needs worldwide with her art. She gathers much of her inspiration from personal observations of the landscape, research, and conservation efforts. She aims to inspire others in connection with the natural world through her art. In doing so, she hopes more people can learn about species of conservation need and help to promote habitat restoration.

Artist Uses work for Education and Advocacy at JHP Exhibit

In the last month, anglers have ventured to many North Shore rivers to try their luck catching a Lake Superior steelhead during the spring steelhead run. With the early arrival of warm spring temperatures and precipitation, conditions aligned at the beginning of April for the official start to the run. WTIP’s Kalli Hawkins met Cory Goldsworthy, the Minnesota DNR Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor, at an upper shore river for a fishing excursion and to talk about the season thus far.

Spring Steelhead Run

If you have ever lived in a big city, taking out the trash is a pretty simple task: Bag it up, walk it to the curbside bin, and toss it in. If you are lucky, you never thought much more about it. If you live in Cook County, you likely think about trash in a much different way. Maybe you compost your organics in the backyard. You probably haul your recycling in and sort out the contents into the many large boxes at the recycling center. You’ve also likely taken your trash to the local dump site. If you thought that was a complicated journey to deal with your waste, think again. For your trash, the journey has just begun. The two owners of the only waste hauler in Cook County, North Shore Waste, think about this journey all day, every day. Without them, our lives would literally be a mess.

Transfer Station Expansion Project

Talent lives all around us in the Arrowhead region of Northeastern Minnesota. Local resident and blossoming song writer, Emma Tweten performs one of their first original tunes live in the WTIP studio. You can see them perform around the county.

Mr. McHugh is pioneering new ways of teaching and learning in his communications class at ISD 166, Cook County High School. Students learn how to use modern technology to tell stories through writing, audio, and video recording. Students learn how to craft a story arch while expressing their unique interests by covering topics they enjoy. With the support of WTIP, M Baxley teamed up with Mr. McHugh for special expertise on the video portion of the project. See the full story of this collaboration at WTIP.org.

High School Story Tellers

Dozens of thrill-seekers and community boosters took an icy dip in frozen Poplar Lake on March 30, 2024. White Pine Lodge and Poplar Haus each cut holes in Poplar Lake and invited participants to jump in, under the watchful eye of volunteers from Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department.

The two lodges organized the fundraiser for the fire department to celebrate the end of winter while raising money for a good cause. Each location offered a sauna to warm participants before and after their icy dips.

WTIP visited the Poplar Haus plunge location to chat with fire department volunteers supervising the hole and capture the action. Find the interview transcript and audio below.
