Bear season has arrived in Taos. It happens every May or June without fail, and for bear families it is a normal and necessary fact of life. Mom bears push the yearlings out of their lives for good, in favor of a far greater interest in finding a mate when they come into estrus when the yearlings are about 16-17 months old.

While initially many young bears are skittish spending long periods up in trees, they soon discover that Mom has prepared them well for living on their own. They quickly begin developing confidence and become self-sufficient. And so the life cycle of the black bear continues.

Black bear mothers (yes, some black bears are brown) give birth in January and stay with their cubs for 16-17 months. Family bonds remain strong right up to the day of family breakup. In the days before family breakup, they play together, groom each other, sleep together, and suckle. Like human youngsters, yearling bears sleep very soundly, trusting their safety to the alertness of their mother.

Family breakup happens suddenly during mating season in May or June when the mother is nearly ready to mate. The sudden presence of a male can precipitate it. At first, the mother is torn between her yearlings and the persistent male, but within a day after family breakup, she will chase her yearlings away whenever she encounters them. Littermates may also separate from each other. Each settles in a separate area within its mother’s territory. The mother then avoids those areas, giving the yearlings nearly exclusive feeding rights. Most sons voluntarily leave within a couple years after the breakup. Most daughters eventually establish territories in or near their mother’s territory. (via @northamericanbearcenter)

Living in @taos you really get to understand what #twilight is. Here ours sometimes begin at our mountain #horizon #sunset. Yesterday we were saw what was brewing and rushed out to capture forgetting that later window can be when those intense colors get thrown. #Twilight is light produced by sunlight scattering in the upper atmosphere, when the #Sun is below the horizon, which illuminates the lower atmosphere and the Earth's surface. The word twilight can also refer to the periods of time when this illumination occurs. This pano of 13 vertical frames was the last set shot at 7:59pm and way more dramatic and colorful from the ones beginning at 7:51pm. Sometimes you just have to remember to wait for it! Rare Space Weather visible to our camera sensor in northern New Mexico around 36°N and 30” exposure at 11pm @taos time last night. Cloudy skies made it a challenge to observe but some classic #aurora colors peeked through!

The current #geomagneticstorm peaked yesterday around midnight. The current storm is classified as G5, or “extreme.” It is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the surface — about 16x the diameter of Earth — which is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours. The sun’s activity ebbs and flows on an 11-year cycle now approaching a solar maximum. (via @nytimes)

#SpaceWeather describes the phenomena that impact systems and technologies in orbit and on Earth. As a storm leaves the sun, it passes through the corona and into the solar wind. When it reaches Earth, it energizes Earth’s #magnetosphere and accelerates electrons and protons down to our magnetic field lines where they collide with the atmosphere and ionosphere, particularly at high latitudes.

The #auroraborealis Borealis (Northern Lights) and #Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) are the result of these collisions in the upper atmosphere. (Protons cause faint and diffuse aurora, usually not easily visible to the human eye.) The electrons transfer energy to the atmosphere exciting the atoms and molecules to higher energy states. When they relax back down to lower energy states, they release their energy in the form of light. This is similar to how a neon light works.

Solar flares can produce strong x-rays that degrade or block HF radio waves used for communication. Solar Energetic Particles (energetic protons) can penetrate satellite electronics and cause failure and can block radio communications at high latitudes in Solar Radiation Storms. Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) can cause Geomagnetic Storms at Earth and induce extra currents in the ground that can degrade power grid operations. They can also modify the signal from radio navigation systems (GPS and GNSS) causing degraded accuracy. (via @noaa)

So many things to know before you go out for a ride… which we will be covering! But for today’s #trailtuesday we are beginning at the end of any trail with what you gotta start doing each time you get back. Wash your bike!

🧼💪🚲

To not only keep it looking like 🆕 but also in great mechanical shape, @rift.cycles emphasizes the importance of getting in the routine of cleaning up before you put away. And that includes lubing your chain at least once a month!

“Lube your chain and do it often!” explains owner @molllllllllusk, “Your bike is like any kind of machine! Metal touching metal creates friction, and your chain must be lubed to move smoothly through the drive train. Your drive train will shift smoother, perform better and most importantly last longer. Do it when you wash your bike!”

In a hot and dry climate like @taos it’s also important to store your bike out of the sun, if you can’t keep it indoors. Our elements are harsh enough out in the wilds, so work hard to baby that bike when it’s not working hard for you. It doesn’t take much!

For an easy quick but effective wash, add a little Dawn dish soap to cold water and suds it up using a soft brush. You can pick one up at your local hardware store —@parktoolblue sells a nice full wash kit, too. Once you get in all the nooks and crannies, thoroughly rinse off all the soap and dry well. Then just apply the lube, spinning the pedal as you go and using a rag to clean any excess lube. Rock “n” Roll dry Gold lube is cheap, like $9 and will last you for years!

Now you’re good to go for next time - no hold ups! For a great entry level trail with all sorts of options to craft a quick spin or a longer ride from beginner to intermediate, try the Rift Valley Trail system parking at the Slide Trail #trailhead at the end of County Road 110. For the best views of the #riograndegorge and #sangredecristomountains, we recommend a late afternoon ride into golden hour.

High winds, high risk 🚩#wildfire and #fireseason #PSA

Rain is in the forecast but conditions are as dry as ever, so take the time to do your fire season pre-check at home now.

Clear dry brush and vegetation away from the outside of your house starting in the 5-foot zone and working your way out to the 100- to 200-foot zone.

Consider fire resistant landscaping and hardening your home with fire-resistant building materials. Flying embers from a wildfire can destroy homes up to a mile away.

Taos County (and #taosskivalley) is part of the Firewise Community network and has a cost-share program through the Taos Soil and Water Conservation District called the Forest Health Program. The District will pay about 80% of thinning costs, as well as provide expertise for defensible space projects. You can find information for this valuable program and how to apply online at tswcd.org or by calling 575-751-9253.

Of course, when out in nature be mindful of #redflagwarning signage at #carsonnationalforest access points. Secure loads and make sure trailer chains aren’t dragging sparks.

Pink refers to a perennial moss called ground phlox that is native to North America, and the bloom is one of the early indications of the return of spring.

But here on the #mesa, just after the moon lowered itself into the hills, #broadtailedhummingbirds (6,7,8) were feasting on our own colorful new ground dwellers — #indianpaintbrush flowers of brilliant orange-red and purple leaves as the sunrise flashed those fancy magenta #gorget feathers! Maybe a hummingbird moon is in order in April, in honor of this new arrival and his first flower at the start of spring bird migration! Did you notice his beak is covered in the pollen?

Our Location

We are located an easy drive from the Town of Taos, which sits at the base of the mountains. It takes about 30 minutes to drive from Taos Plaza to the Ski Valley, passing through historic villages and mountain canyons. The area’s early ski pioneers, residents, and employees blended their love of skiing with the local Native American and Spanish cultures to craft a mountain retreat out of an old mining town. Over the years, Taos has become world-renowned for steep runs of powdery, dry snow in the winter and stunning forest surroundings in the spring and summer.
