June 2, 2015 Gavin and his family were on a family vacation in the Cayman Islands. Gavin’s mother, Allison, noticed a ‘glow’ in his right eye when her iPhone flash went off. Allison had recalled a recent article she read that a glow could be indicative of an eye tumor. She immediately showed her father, a physician, and he sent them on the next flight back to Atlanta to get it checked out. Two days later the heartbreaking news was confirmed that Gavin had unilateral right eye retinoblastoma. The tumor was too large for other treatment options so his right eye was removed June 9th.
Once the pathology came back a week later, the cancer had sadly spread outside of the eye. Gavin had to undergo 6 months of chemotherapy where he gained his nickname Supergav. He now has a follow-up eye or brain scan every 3 months and we are happy to report that as of February 2018 Gavin is now 2 years cancer free! He has adjusted well to his prosthetic eye and is so full of life. He is excited to be starting kindergarten in the fall and is truly our little superhero!
