About First Descents
Founded by professional kayaker Brad Ludden in 2000, First Descents kicked off in Vail with one, 14-participant kayaking camp in 2001. By 2009, the program had grown to include nine camps, serving over 140 young adults with cancer in six states.
In 2010, the organization expanded yet again, adding mountain-climbing programs to the lineup for a total of 15 adventure programs in five months – the most ambitious schedule to date.
With so many young adults being diagnosed each year in the United States, First Descents feels an obligation to continue to grow and offer these programs to more of those in need. With continued fundraising support and volunteer dedication, we’re confident we will continue to expand.
