Our Mission Sisters Of The Road exists to build authentic relationships and alleviate the hunger of isolation in an atmosphere of nonviolence and gentle personalism that nurtures the whole individual, while seeking systemic solutions that reach the roots of homelessness and poverty to end them forever. Our Organization Evolving out of hundreds of hours of one to one conversations with people living in the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, Sisters Of The Road was created in 1979 as a non-profit restaurant serving homeless and low-income residents of the area. After over 30 years of operation, the original goals of Sisters remain unchanged: • To be a safe, public place for everyone, especially women and children, • To offer nourishing meals at little cost or in exchange for labor, • To offer job training and employment experience to local residents. Our Philosophy Nonviolence, gentle personalism and systemic change are the principles that inform all actions and decisions at Sisters. We believe that all individuals are equally worthy, that no one has a monopoly on the truth, and that we have much to learn from one another. We consistently refuse to participate in or condone any act of violence, harm, or humiliation, including sexism or racism. All violence is interrupted and we work to resolve conflicts with respect. Sisters recognizes, nurtures and celebrates community by building relationships through its programs, special events and outreach.
