Item Description

Israel Idonije, the “I-Train,” a Nigerian-Canadian defensive lineman for the National Football League's Chicago Bears. Idonije was recruited by the Chicago Bears as a practice squad player late in the 2003 season. He made the Bears' roster the following year, and has been with the Bears since then. Idonije is known for his versatility, including his ability to play both defensive tackle and defensive end and his blocked kicks. Idonije is so athletic that he once played gunner on the punt coverage team, a highly unusually role for a 6-6, 275-pounder.

One of the Bears’ most versatile players, the nine-year veteran has been shifting from end to tackle in the nickel defense. He is the founder of the Israel Idonije Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is “inspiring underserved communities by providing programs focused on social and emotional life skills.”

Mask designed by Cheryl McGugan

Cheryl McGugan's motivation was the Nigerian heritage of Israel Idonije, which identified his mask with the kingdom of Benin. The kingdom was a powerhouse, that held the tradition of the "head" as the symbol or focus of human destiny. The modern helmet blends into a royal bronze headdress. Her art attempts to affirm and restore the sacred.
