This weekend, we pay tribute to the fallen crew of the USS Constitution. Make a leaf to be placed on our Willow Tree in tribute and share why celebrating Memorial Day is important. Willow trees can be rooted from cuttings with ease and are seen as survivors and symbols of rebirth. This activity is available to all Museum visitors during operating hours until the end of the day on Sunday, May 26. For more information: bit.ly/4bwyLpd ... See MoreSee Less

"for a long time Captain Gwinn had been suffering...."

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we will share stories of USS Constitution's brave crew. This letter is from the Ship's Assistant Surgeon to Caroline Gwinn, sharing the news of the death of her husband, John Gwinn, the first commanding officer of "Old Ironsides" to die while serving in that role.

Caroline Salles Lynch married John Gwinn III, then a United States Navy lieutenant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 22, 1823. John Gwinn became captain of USS Constitution in 1848 and died a year later. Their portraits are by American portrait artist Thomas Sully (1783-1872) between 1837 and 1839, while Gwinn was at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

We invite you to join us in a moment of silence - at home or in person - as we honor those who sacrificed their lives this Memorial Day. At 3 pm EST the Charlestown Navy Yard Boston National Historical Park and USS Constitution will participate in Taps Across America, pausing for Taps to honor the fallen. 🎺 🇺🇸
