Item Description
Collectible Surgi Doll by Maria Tapal: Cotton warp; silk, wool, cotton, Susi fabric weft, dyed using indigo, lac, marigold, and turmeric.
"Bahaar" means "Spring" in Urdu, which is the inspiration for my Surgi Doll. It represents hope, growth and new beginnings. The fabric is handwoven using an overshot pattern and the yarns are hand dyed using natural materials. The colors and patterns are meant to evoke a feeling of happiness.
Item Special Note
Maria Tapal is a Pakistani-Canadian textile artist and designer, interested in the intersection of cultural identities. Using natural dyes and weaving, she creates pieces which take inspiration from her cultural background and memories. She uses colors, textures and patterns to weave stories and experiences of her life as an immigrant.
