ABOUT OUR HONOREES:

As the Founding Chair of Blue Engine’s board of directors, Andy Dunn established an organization-wide culture of philanthropy that fueled early iterations of our work in schools. With the help of his dedicated partnership, Blue Engine touched the lives of over 1,000 students in its first few years. Andy’s commitment to philanthropy grows in lock step with his professional career. As CEO of Bonobos and SVP of Digital Consumer Brands for Walmart US eCommerce, he has supported worthy causes around the world, and continues to be a valued partner to Blue Engine.

Our Founder and President, Nick Ehrmann, is the originating force behind Blue Engine’s efforts to rethink classrooms in service to student achievement. As CEO, he led Blue Engine from its early days in a single partner school to an organization that serves 1800 students annually in classrooms across New York City. He challenged Blue Engine teachers and staff to continually do better for young people and prepared the organization to take on the next phase of its journey.

We are thrilled to honor these two extraordinary individuals at this year’s Annual Benefit. They exemplify the values of partnership and collaboration that make better student outcomes possible.

ABOUT BLUE ENGINE:

Our Approach. Blue Engine’s team teaching model re-architects the traditional classroom by shifting the teacher-to-student ratio from 1:30 to 1:6 in gateway skills subjects. This model embeds teams of three apprentice educators into one classroom, resulting in dramatic gains in student achievement and a pipeline of effective, culturally responsive teachers.

Our Teams. Harnessing the power of teamwork, we recruit and develop individuals interested in exploring teaching to serve as Blue Engine Teaching Apprentices (“BETAs”) for one to two years. Alongside lead teachers, BETAs collaborate to provide individualized learning for students while gaining hands-on classroom experience. Many of our organization’s staff members are former teachers and nonprofit leaders. All of us believe that impact is possible and necessary in public schools.

Our Impact. Our commitment to rigorous evaluation and learning drives precise measurement of student achievement and the strength of teaching and principal partnerships. Students in Blue Engine classrooms gain an additional 7 to 9 months of learning in a single school year. As a result, more students achieve passing and college-ready scores on the Regents exam, a requirement to graduate from high school in NY and suceed on campus.
